8 Free FTP Clients For Mac

If you have a self-installed WordPress blog, you should be familiar withFile Transfer Protocol (FTP). This is the protocol used by WordPress users to upload plugins and themes to the web server. FTP is also a popular protocol used by website builders to transfer files between computer and web server.

To be able to use FTP, you need an FTP client. There are two kinds of FTP clients: computer-based andweb-basedOnline FTP Clients: Use FTP Online without Installing A ClientRead More, but we are not going to discuss the web-based clients here.

While trying to update one of my blogs, I tried to search for several alternative FTP clients for my Mac. And here are the results

1.Classic FTP is a fully featured, free FTP client available for Mac OS X and Windows. It has a Mirror and Upload tool which will scan a selected local folder and upload any files that do not exist on the remote folder. The application also allows you to synchronize navigation of a local and remote folder.

2.CrossFTP is designed to be an easy-to-use client. It has a two-pane browser-like user interface which is simple to learn and use. Multi-tabs design facilitates managing and connecting multiple FTP sites simultaneously in a single window. Its written in Java so it would work in any Java-enabled machine.

3.FileZilla is a popular Windows-based FTP client. I didnt even know that there was a Mac version of FileZilla until I researched for this article. I had high hopes when I was about to use this app for the first time. But personally, I think that the Mac version is not as easy to use asthe Windows versionTransfer Files by FTP with FileZillaRead More. FileZilla is also available for Linux.

4.Cyberduck is a open source product licensed under the GPL and free to use. It is available in many languages and most translations are contributed by users. It is voted by many Mac communities as one of the best FTP clients available for Mac. Cyberduck is also available as a dashboard widget.

5.OneButton FTP is a graphical FTP client for Mac OS X with a strong emphasis on simplicity, drag and drop usability, and file queuing. It allows you to easily transfer files to and from remote servers, such as the ones hosting your websites, simply by dragging files to and from your computer. At the time of writing, this app is no longer supported by the author, but still works fine.

6.MacFusion is an open source Mac application that allows you to work with files on servers across the internet, as if they were sitting on your computer. Macfusion presents as a Volume in Finder. Macfusion works with SSH/SFTP and FTP servers. This app requires Leopard andGoogles MacFUSE. You can learn more about how to set up MacFUSE on thewiki howto pageor theQuicker Start Guide page.

7.bertragen is a widget designed to transfer files, be it to a FTP server, to another Mac running Ubertragen on your local network (through Bonjour) or to one of your Bluetooth devices.

8. is a drag-and-drop FTP upload widget. It has a simple interface and runs nicely. Just drop a file, the gate slides up, the file gets transfered, and you are done.

There are others, of course, which did not make it to the list simply because of my lack of knowledge. So, if you know any other alternatives, please share using the comment below.

Do not use ClassicFTP it is sooo slow and to my knowledge it lacks major features such as CHMODEing.

SublimeText is a really good one. But unfortunately its only for windows.

FireFTP and Fetch for me. For simple jobs, Go=Server… and typeftp://serveris also adequate.

Ive been using Filezilla for a long time. I personally found it much superior than Cyberduck. chmoding, remote editing, toggling hidden/system files etc cant be done (or maybe there is some complex way to do it) in Cyberduck. Thanks for the article, I have some others to try.

Er…doesnt OSX include the usual FTP client…you know, ftp?

AFAIK, theres no stand-alone FTP client included in OS X, but you can use Go — Connect To Server menu (or Command + K) in Finder to connect to FTP server.

Fetch is free for educational and charitable use.

Good information and thanks for doing the research. If you use the Firefox browser on your Mac you can install the FireFTP addon for the browser (This also works in Windows).

I use this exclusively now and would recommend it to any one because of its ease of use. You can get it here: /

SFTP Using Command Line(UNIX Mac OS X

This page contains instructions on how to transfer files between two computers connected to the Internet using the SFTP utility in UNIX. This utility allows you to transfer both ASCII and binary files between computers quickly and efficiently.

Before you can perform any action using the SFTP utility, you must connect and log in to the remote host (the computer or server you wish to transfer files to or from).

Use standard file and directory UNIX commands at thesftpprompt. For example, on the remote host, you can uselsto get a listing of the current directory,ls -lto get a long listing, orcdto move to a different directory.

To issue commands on the local host (your computer), use standard file and directory UNIX commands as when you are issuing commands on the remote host. However, you will need to begin each command with an exclamation mark (!). Your starting local or working directory is specified as the default incoming and outgoing directory.

If you want to receive files in, or send files from, a directory other than your starting working directory, you will need to specify the directory. For example, if you want to download all files to a folder calledINCOMINGon your local directory, you first have to create that folder with the! mkdirUNIX command, and then you need to use thelcdcommand to change to that new folder. Here is the syntax for this example:

For a more detailed explanation of other UNIX commands, visitUNIX Commands and Utilities.

To download a file from a remote host:

Once you are pointing to the correct directory on the remote host, use the

command to copy a file to the local directory (on your computer).

The file is copied to your local directory.

Once you are pointing to the correct directory on the remote host, use the

10 Best Dashboard Widgets for Your Mac

One way to give others access to your files is to run an FTP server on your Mac. Mac OS X Snow Leopard comes with an FTP server built in, so you just have to activate it. You might wonder why youd use FTP to share files when you can use Personal File Sharing or Windows File Sharing. The main advantage to FTP is compatibility: Not only can people on your LAN access files, but anyone on the Internet can also access your files, regardless of the type of machine theyre using.

Just as you do with the other file-sharing methods, you need to create a user account on your computer before someone can connect to and get files from your Mac. After you have accounts created for the users, you can enable FTP sharing like this:

The System Preferences dialog opens.

Snow Leopard reminds you on the Advanced sheet that people can use ftp://ip address, where ip address is the IP address of your Mac.

The Advanced dialog, and System Preferences window close and your changes are saved.

If youre using an AirPort/AirPort Extreme Base Station or other cable/digital subscriber line (DSL) router to share your Internet connection, place the Mac that you want people on the Internet to access in aDMZ,or demilitarized zone. Check your cable/DSL router documentation for more information.

FileZilla Best Free FTP Client

As a blogger, we need to deal with server side that including upload and download files from your hosting FTP server. There are many free and paid FTP clients in the market, but some of them are worth trying. Here Im talking about my favorite FTP client FileZilla which happens to be free and you available for multiple platforms.

FileZilla has become one of those essential software that I install after fresh installation of my computer. Here is a screenshot of FileZilla which you can see.

Hostname: Hostname is your FTP server IP or FTP Server name

Username: Username to access your FTP account

Password: Password to access your FTP account

Once you have entered all these details, click onquick connect.

Now you will be on your FTP server, and you will see all your files in the right-hand panel of the FileZilla screen. Now browse any file on the left side from your Computer, Right Click and hit on upload.

Moreover, if you have multiple FTP server, you can use Site Manager feature of FileZilla to save the login credential of servers and login next time with the single click. FileZilla also gives you the option to export and import all your config including saved site details. So if you use multiple computers, you can always import one setting into another one.

So far, I have found FileZilla to be the most simple and powerful FTP client that you can use for free.

If this is the first time you are going to use the FileZilla, you should watch this free video tutorial fromBluehost. For most of the cPanel hosting, the configuration would be the same. If not, you just need to get your FTP login information of server & use FileZilla:

There are few other free FTP tools out there. For most of the platform, I recommend FileZilla.CyberDuckis another good alternative.

Do let us know about your favorite free FTP software?

FileZilla saves your saves your passwords in a plain text file on your PC which makes it easy to get your passwords stolen.

I use FileZilla Secure, its the same as filezilla but it encrypts your saved passwords with a master password.

Filezilla is good enough for the basics. However, I think FTP clients are definitely losing ground to other options such as web rtc. This is likely due to issues of security and speed. For work related large file transfers Id take a look at Innorix DS.

Very useful post, I have been searching for a free FTP client for a week and finally now my search is over.

Nihar™s last blog post..Friday Night Links Party 29 May 2009

FileZilla I am using from quite a sometime but i was not aware about the firefox extension will surely give it a try.

I am using both but for quick use i am using firefox extension. I like both.

FileZilla is my fav ftp client, I am using it from over 8 months now.. before tht i allready tried many others like fireftp and cuteftp, but none of them was tht handy, plus i like to use it more and more cauze,it gets updated nearly everyweek, for better and safer usage !!

But sometimes I will use Smart FTP and Others for review ! 🙂

I use Fireftp as i am blogging from my college pc.

I have also used Filezilla and i can say that Filezilla is a good FTP application.

I use Filezilla from a long time and i am satisfied by the performance, i heard too much about FireFTP also.

Macinstruct

Several weeks ago, we showed youhow to turn your Mac into a web server. That article is useful for individuals needing to host web pages on their Mac in a pinch, but it doesnt really go far enough. After all, any good web server should be- that is, you should be able to add and remove files from your Mac when youre away from home.

You need to turn your Mac into anFTPserver! This will allow any individual with a user account on your Mac to remotely access your Macs files with an FTP client. Just think of the possibilities:

Youre in a band, and your friend wants to hear the songs on your newest CD. Instead of mailing him the CD or posting the songs on a website, you decide to give him access to your FTP server so he can download the songs.

Youre at work, and you need to access a file stored on your Mac at home. If you have an FTP server setup, you can retrieve the file in a matter of minutes.

Every Mac ships with a built-in FTP server, and its easy to turn on and use. Well show you how.

The first step to setting up your Macs FTP server is to actually turn it on. Thanks to Mac OS X, this is a relatively straight forward process. Heres how to do it:

The FTP Server will turn on. (This may take a minute or two.) After it has started, click the Firewall tab and make sure your Macs firewall is turned on. Also make sure that the checkbox next to FTP Access is selected. This will allow people to access your files through your Macs firewall.

[Editors Note: Weve copied this section from ourweb server tutorial. If youre already using DynDNS, you can skip ahead to the next section.]

Now your Mac is running an FTP server, but if youre on a local network, its still inaccessible to the rest of the world. The same safeguards that prevent weirdoes from accessing your computer also prevent you from sharing your files. Not to worry! Theres a great service calledDynDNSthat bypasses all of these trivial annoyances and makes your FTP server available to everyone.

DynDNS automatically tracks your Mac and maps your IP address to a domain name. That way, your FTP server will always be available, even if you move your Mac to another location and change IP addresses.

Confirm your new DynDNS by clicking on the link they email you. Log in and click the Add Host Services link, and then click the Add Dynamic DNS Host link.

Enter a hostname and select a domain for your FTP server. This third-level domain name is how the world will access your FTP server, so pick carefully! Dont worry too much about the IP Address right now — DynDNS automatically detects that, and it may or may not be correct. Well worry about that later.

In DynDNS Updater, select Edit Users from the File menu. Enter your username and password. Adding a description is optional. Make sure the

checkbox is selected — you want to protect your password!

In the DynDNS Updater Users window, click the Start Daemon button. If the status of your account says Ok, your FTP server is available at your DynDNS URL. Thats it — youre finished!

After youve enabled FTP Access and turned on DynDNS, youll be able to use any FTP client (likeTransmit) to access your Macs files and folders. Just type in your DynDNS domain name and the username and password you use to access your Mac OS X account.

Once you connect to your Mac, youll be able to transfer any files you like! Its almost as good as being in front of your Mac.

FTP Disk™

In order to maintain your Web site you surely need some kind of FTP software however not all the FTP tools available today seem to be designed with frequent uploading in mind. Indeed, they are not always as handy as they could or should be. Actually, they all seem to copy each others. Updating files on your server can be a repetitive and boring process, and in many cases its more trouble than its worth. It doesnt have to be that way, however, as FTP Disk makes this whole process much more intuitive.

With FTP Disk just drag and drop your files directly on a server in the list to get them uploaded to the selected path. You can create as many servers as you need with different paths and initiate several uploads at the same time. Of course you can also log into servers as usual, navigate thru directories, create files and folders, download and upload files, modify text files with the built-in editor, preview pictures and change permissions.

FTP Disk not only offers a very handy and easy-to-use interface for managing servers, indeed it is also very easy to navigate thru directories. Thanks to the directory bar, a visual and interactive control that displays your current location, you can move to other directories with a single click of your mouse. You can create favorite locations and jump to them at any time. Those favorites are available from the server panel so you can go directly to a directory when connecting to a server or upload files to it!

Current FTP Disk version is 1.4. FTP Disk has been reviewed positively 1,074 times getting a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars!

Transmit FTP client for Mac OS X gets updated to version 4

Vincent Danen reviews the long-awaited update to his favorite FTP client for OS X, Transmit. Are the speed claims for real?

ByVincent DaneninApple in the Enterprise,May 30, 2010, 10:00 PM PST

Panic recently released a new major version ofTransmit, over five years since version 3.0 was released. As far as I am concerned, Transmit is one of the best FTP clients for OS X; Ive been using it for the last five years. Because of that length of time, a paid upgrade to version 4.0 is quite reasonable ($30 for five years of software usage is pretty good value, after all). But is the upgrade worth it? Transmit 3 is a solid FTP client, supporting FTP, FTP with SSL, SFTP, WebDav, and Amazon S3.

One of the features that Transmit 4 (T4 from this point forward) boasts over previous versions is a serious speed increase. It claims that listing 30,000 remote files is 4x faster, that downloading 30,000 small files is 18x faster, deleting 30,000 small files is 2.25x faster, and uploading 15,000 small files is 25x faster. Those are impressive speed gains. Of course, how many people will be uploading or downloading thousands of small files at one time?

Uploading a 14MB zip archive to my Web host using SFTP took the same amount of time as previous versions, so the speed gains are in how Transmit handles and queues FTP commands. Looking in the T4 preferences, there is a Transfers section where you can throttle upload and download speeds and specify the number of transfers done simultaneously (five, by default). With Transmit 3 (T3) you can tell it to queue files to transfer, and the default there is two simultaneous transfers.

So the real test then is to upload a lot of little files to see how well T4 works compared to T3. To test, I created 14014 5-byte files across 14 directories, and uploaded the top-level directory.

The immediate thing I noticed was that by dragging the top-level folder as one item in T3, it was treated as one item for the queue. This meant that there was no parallel uploading taking place; only one connection to the server was initiated. It took T3 42.5 minutes to upload all of the files, and 15.5 minutes to delete them. T4, on the other hand, took 41.5 minutes to upload all 14000 files, and 13 minutes to delete them.

I didnt experience the 25x speed increase whatsoever, and yet the speed for T3 is very close to what was shown on their site. That means that according to their site, the upload in T4 should have taken about 2 minutes (however, this may be due to using SFTP versus regular FTP, or perhaps version 4.0.2 has a bug in it). Unfortunately, I had no real way to test via regular FTP since I refuse to use unsecured FTP for anything other than downloading files.

Since the speed increase is woefully underwhelming, at least there are a number of other features that really make T4 a compelling upgrade. First off, the GUI looks much more modern than the aging T3 interface. Some of the GUI refinements that really bring Transmit up to speed with the current OS X interface include subtle things like:

T3s pull down for FTP transcripts versus T4s separate window.

The ability to use Quick Look on remote files.

The integrated transfer window that can be pulled up over the file listing (rather than as a separate queue-style window).

The Cover Flow view for files, and the ability to switch panes from local to remote with a simple button click.

There are improvements to the Amazon S3 support, including CloudFront support. If you use SFTP, you can also issue SSH commands, such as expanding an archive or creating an archive of files. Another area of significant improvement is the AppleScript support; T3 had AppleScript support as well, but in T4 it has been overhauled and is apparently much more reliable.

Perhaps the most compelling new feature in T4 is the new Transmit Disk feature. Transmit Disk is very similar to ExpanDrive: remote connections show up in the Finder to be interacted with directly. T4 doesnt need to be running for Transmit Disk to work, so it is an extension to the overall system in much the same way that ExpanDrive is.

Having used ExpanDrive for quite a while, Ive found the support in T4 is much better than ExpanDrive. Its more stable, more responsive, and Ive yet to reboot the system because the Finder got locked up trying to eject a disk (as has happened with the latest ExpanDrive).

Overall, there is enough goodness in T4 to make it worth shelling out the $19USD to upgrade. I also appreciate that this is the first time in five years that Panic has asked to be paid for an upgrade. Many other developers expect users to hand over upgrade fees every year or two, so kudos to Panic for delivering a stellar upgrade and for allowing the use of the previous T3 for five years at a reasonable price.

I think FileZilla is one of the best FTP clients for both Mac and Windows:

Based on your personal preference, you might find some other better FTP client for Mac. However, the difference will be small as FTP is a mature and standard protocol. To connect to an FTP server, you need to enter:

FTP encryption (applies to FTP only: FTPS / FTPES)

FTP mode: Active or Passive. (Usually select Passive)

FTP port: Optional, usually 21 (or 22 for SFTP)

If you useDriveHQs FTP Server Hosting service, you can use FileZilla, or DriveHQ FileManager.DriveHQ FileManageris seamlessly integrated with DriveHQs Cloud storage service andCloud FTP Server/Cloud File Server. It is easier than other FTP clients. You only need to enter your username and password to logon.

Thegold standardof macOS file transfer apps just drove into the future.Transmit 5 is here.Upload, download, and manage files ontons of serverswith aneasy, familiar, and powerful UI.Its quite good.

Transmit now connects to10 new cloud services, like Backblaze B2, Box, Google Drive, DreamObjects, Dropbox, Microsoft Azure, and Rackspace Cloud Files.

And yes, Transmit still handles the classics FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, andS3 better than any. We make complex services drag-and-drop simple.

Transmit 5 now includesPanic Sync, oursecure and fast way to sync your sites.(You can learn about Panic Sync here.)And our File Sync feature adds support forlocal-to-local and remote-to-remotesync, while also giving you more fine-grained control.

We disassembled Transmits engine and rebuilt it, again, to significantly boost speed. T5 isbetter at multithreadingandsmarter about complex folders. Plus its got anew activity viewto better focus on what Transmit is doing right now. Its very fast.

Its been a very long time since the last major Transmit update, and we had a lot to do. Put simply, almost every corner of Transmit has been improved. Some examples:

So, you have files you need to manage on servers. Maybe youre a developer. Maybe youre a system administrator. Maybe youre a contractor or freelancer. But you need to connect to a thing, and upload, download, or tweak the files on that thing.

Transmits big strength is its clean interface our famous dual-pane view is way faster than the Finder. But Transmit also has tons of very nice features like File Sync, which can mirror remote and local (or, now, local and local!) files in one click.

Transmit also takes great care to let you organize your Servers for fast access. And with Panic Sync, you can sync them to all of your computers. Never type a server address again.

Now, long ago wed call Transmit an FTP client, but today, with Transmit 5, we connect to lots of different server types and cloud services. For example, Amazon S3 dramatically changed the way files are served on the internet, and Transmit is a great way to manage your Amazon S3 buckets.

Put simply: Transmit lets you quickly and easily manage files on the internet.

You can read more about its features here.

ProFTPD grew out of the desire to have a secure and configurable FTP server, and out of a significant admiration of the Apache web server. There are currently a very limited number of FTP servers running on Unix (or Unix-like) hosts. The most commonly used server is wu-ftpd. While wu-ftpd provides excellent performance and is generally a good product, it lacks numerous features found in newer Win32 FTP servers and has a poor security history. Many people, including the developers who work on ProFTPD, have spent a great deal of time fixing bugs and hacking features into wu-ftpd. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that a complete redesign was necessary in order to implement the configurability and features desired. ProFTPD is not a hack based on any other server, its an independent source tree from the ground up. A number of well known and high traffic sites use ProFTPD.

While ProFTPD should compile out of the box under Mac OS X, Fink includes ProFTPD in its distribution for OS X.

It is even available for pocket pc (Windows CE, Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 6).

It is available just for windows and a product of the same brand which offers classicFTP. Fling is a free FTP client which integrates itself with windows explorer making the transfer process as easy as it could be. The software supports both file transfer protocol (ftp) and network file transfer. Uploads can be automatic (upload as soon as the files are changed), at a preset interval (eg. every hour) or manually.

Its not a standalone software but its an addon for mozilla mozilla mozilla firefox and widely used. It is available on all platforms where you can install mozilla firefox.

It comes both in free(lite) version as well as paid(pro) version. As the words on its official website says Core FTP LE free Windows software that includes the client FTP features you need. Features like SFTP (SSH), SSL, TLS, IDN, browser integration, site to site transfers, FTP transfer resume, drag and drop support, file viewing & editing, firewall support, custom commands, FTP URL parsing, command line transfers, filters, and much, much more! It is worth trying.

As it claims to 314 % faster than other ftp clients, we should give it a try as it is available for free for personal use. Its features as outlined on its website Up to 314% faster than other multi-threaded FTP programs ! You simply have to try this program to believe it! The speed is incredible. Buffer overstuffing techniques allow faster throughput than other competing programs! Instant Connections !! (proprietary technology). Instant Directories !! (proprietary technology) .On the fly file compression. It claims to be even faster than my favorite free ftp client Filezilla, but I dont think so.

gFTP is a free/open source multithreaded FTP client used on *NIX based systems. It includes both a GUI (which utilizes the GTK+) and a command-line interface. You can now carry out your FTP task on ubuntu or other gnu/linux distro.

Kasablanca is a ftp client, written in c++, using the kde libraries. among its features are currently encryption (auth tls) support, fxp, site bookmarks, and queued transfers. It is also widely used among linux users.

Web-based ftp is useful if you have no ftp client installed on your pc or if you are on your friends pc or if you are on your college or school or work systems where FTP port access might have been blocked. Use these web-based FTP service to manage your webserver easily with features similar to those of a common ftp client.

I has been using WS_FTP pro from long but now i am using FileZilla because its FREE and also rich of features, so my vote is for Filezilla

ya memang sangat membantu sekali FTP File Zilla dalam mentransfer data dari localhost ke hosting, saya sudah membuktikannya kaarena saya buat web blog pakai FTP Fille Zilla.

Cool, Firezilla leads the chart all time.

FTPS (TLS) via command line

You can not post a blank message. Please type your message and try again.

Looks like no ones replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask anew question.

Id like to know if its possible to initiate an FTP (with TLS) connection from the command line. I know that FTP is available from the command line, but Im not sure how to enable TLS, if its even available.

My goal is to write an Automator workflow thatsecurelyuploads the content of a chosen folder to an FTP server. I currently use a third-party action called Upload to FTP, but I dont think it uses the TLS protocol.

If youre simply looking for secure file transfers and are not specifically seeking ftps (ftp over tls/ssl), then have a look at ssh (for interactive access) and sftp (for secure file transfers over ssh). Both ssh and sftp can be set up with certificates, and are securely encrypted. There are ftps clients around for Mac OS X (eg: FileZilla, Cyberduck), but command-line sftp is built in.

will attempt to connect via encryption – but it will silently revert to a non encrypted connection if it can not.

might be a better choice: it will fail with an error message like

curl: (64) Requested SSL level failed

Thanks for jumping in on our old thread. I didnt know about –ftp-ssl failing silently under some circumstances, so Ive added -reqd as per your comment. Security is my priority, so I feel much better having added it. Thanks!

Maybe look into the the scp command.
