Oracle client tips

What is an Oracle client and how is a Oracle client different from an Oracle server?

Answer:The Oracle client is the PC-side software such as the Oracle Client, which includes the connectivity prices that allow the PC to communicate with the Oracle server.

The most common issues with Oracle client software are theOracle ClientConfigurationand theOracle Client Security

There are two types of Oracle client software:

Full Oracle client:This contains all of the Oracle client files, both executables and JAR files.

Instant Oracle Client:This contains a smaller footprint, just enough to get a PC connected to Oracle, sqlplus.exe and glogin.exe.

You can download the Oracle client software on the Oracle MOSC of the Oracle web site.

Instant Client in Oracle 10g

Wouldnt it be nice if you didnt have to install the full Oracle client software just to get connectivity to an Oracle instance? Well, it is now reality with Oracles new Instant Client software offering.

If we wanted to go the java route and name the typical Oracle Client installation as a Fat-Client, the Oracle Instant Client would be called the Thin-Client. Oracles Instant Client is a small set of software and libraries that allow you to develop and deploy your applications without having to install Oracles Fat-Client. Taking the name and putting a few definitions around it clarifies everything:

We all know who Oracle is. In this case, it is the software, not the company or the database.

Well, almost instant. With very minor download and setup time, Oracle has given us the ability to connect from a remote machine almost as quick as it takes for you to download this small package.

Typical and true client/server nomenclature here. The client here is used to make a request of the database instance. It does not matter if you are connecting to an Oracle instance on the same box as your client software, within the use of Oracle Instant Client, it is always considered to be a client and not part of the requested database.

The good news here is, even though Oracle has given us a very small footprint in this connection mechanism, we do not lose any of the features associated with the connection mechanism or the underlying database instance. If you compared Oracles full client release against the new Instant Client you would typically find the following.

tnsnames.orafile is used to store database connection information. This file must be created and configured in your current client installation.

To do this, first create your network/admin directory

Now inside you can make your tnsnames.ora  file.

Create file /etc/profile.d/client.sh with the following file content

export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client64  export PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib  export TNS_ADMIN=$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin

To test if Oracle Client and tnsnames.ora works properly execute the following command:

You need to provide more information. For example, if your application is generating an exception (error) please indicate what it is and when it occurs.

Just an FYI, the native .NET Oracle library does not require ODBC nor does it support it. If you need to use ODBC then you would use the System.Data.Odbc library and the Oracle ODBC driver.

HI, I have tnsnames.ora containing duplicate entries. One is invalid and another one is valid. Thier entry order is as 1. Valid entry 2. Invalid entry When I tries to create oracle connection through Oracle.DataAccess.Client driver, it throws exception as ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exists. But when I tries to change the order of those entry in tnsnames.ora like 1. Invalid entry 2. Valid entry Then it able to create connection. Why is this behavior? Is there any solution to it? Regards, Jay

Announcing Offline Persistence Toolkit for JavaScript Client Applications

We are excited to announce the open source release on GitHub of theoffline-persistence-toolkitfor JavaScript client applications, developed by the Oracle JavaScript Extension Toolkit (Oracle JET) team.

The Offline Persistence Toolkit is a client-side JavaScript library that provides caching and offline support at the HTTP request layer. This support is transparent to the user and is done through the Fetch API and an XHR adapter. HTTP requests made while the client device is offline are captured for replay when connection to the server is restored. Additional capabilities include a persistent storage layer, synchronization manager, binary data support and various configuration APIs for customizing the default behavior.

Whilst the toolkit is primarily intended for hybrid mobile applications created using Oracle JET,it can be used withinanyJavaScript client applicationthat requires persistent storage and/or offline data access.

The Offline Persistence Toolkit simplifies life for application developers by providing a response caching solution that works well across modern browsers and web views. The toolkit covers common caching cases with a minimal amount of application-specific coding, but provides flexibility to cover non-trivial cases as well. In addition to providing the ability to cache complete response payloads, the toolkit supports shredding of REST response payloads into objects that can be stored, queried and updated on the client while offline.

The architecture diagram illustrates the major components of the toolkit and how an application interacts with it:

The Offline Persistence Toolkit is distributed as an npm package consisting of AMD modules.

To install the toolkit, enter the following command at a terminal prompt in your apps top-level directory:

The toolkit makes heavy use of the Promise API. If you are targeting environments that do not support the Promise API, you will need to polyfill this feature. We recommend thees6-promisepolyfill.

The toolkit does not have a dependency on a specific client-side storage solution, but does include a PouchDB adapter. If you plan to use PouchDB for your persistent store, you will need to install the following PouchDB packages:

For more information about how to make use of this toolkit in your Oracle JET application or any other JavaScript application, refer to the toolkitsREADME, which also provides details about why we developed this toolkit, how to include it into your app, some simple use cases and links toJS Docand more advanced use cases.

You can also refer to theJET FixItFast sample appthat makes use of the toolkit. You can refer directly to the source code and even use theOracle JET command line interfaceto build and deploy the app to see how it works.

I hope you find this toolkit really useful and if you have any feedback, please submit issues onGitHub.

Installing SSMA for Oracle Client (OracleToSQL

The SSMA client consists of the program files that perform the following tasks:

Connect to an instance of SQL Server.

Convert Oracle database objects to SQL Server syntax.

This topic provides the installation prerequisites and instructions for installing SSMA.

SSMA is designed to work with Oracle 9 or later versions and all editions of SQL Server.

Before you install SSMA, make sure that the computer meets the following requirements:

Windows 7 or later versions, or Windows Server 2008 or later versions.

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version.

The Microsoft Framework version 4.0 or a later version. The .NET Framework version 4.0 is available on the SQL Server product media. You can also obtain it from the.NET Framework Developer Center.

Oracle Client 9.0 or a later version, and connectivity to the Oracle databases that you want to migrate. The Oracle client version must be the same version as, or a later version than, the Oracle database version.

You can install the Oracle Client from the Oracle product media or from the Oracle Web site. For information about connectivity, seeConnecting to Oracle Database OracleToSQL.

Access to and sufficient permissions on the computer that hosts the target instance of SQL Server or Azure SQL DB where you will be migrating database objects and data. For more information, seeConnecting to SQL Server OracleToSQL.

SSMA is a Web download. To download the latest version, see theSQL Server Migration Assistant download page.

After you download the latest version, you must extract the installation files from before you can install SSMA.

Double-click SSMA for Oraclennis the build number.

If you do not have the prerequisites installed, a message will appear that indicates that you must first install required components. Make sure that you have installed all prerequisites, and then run the installation program again.

Read the End User License Agreement. If you agree, selectI accept the terms in the license agreement, and then clickNext.

On the Choose Setup Type page, clickTypical.

The default installation location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for Oracle.

In addition to the SSMA program files, you must also install the SSMA for Oracle extension pack on SQL Server. For more information, seeInstalling SSMA Components on SQL Server OracleToSQL.
